- Many residents of Lucas do not have access to reliable high-speed internet. Basic tasks like streaming video, completing online assignments, or attending virtual meetings are nearly impossible.
- The City Council and the Technology Committee worked for over 18 months to find the best solution to this problem.
- Proposition B allows Lucas to create a municipal fiber utility system to provide its residents with fast and reliable internet access.
WE NEED YOUR VOTE:
- If Prop B fails to pass, it is unlikely this will be on the May ballot, and the law prohibits the City from independently issuing bonds for a fiber utility for the next three years. Private providers are unwilling or unable to offer a long-term, reliable internet solution and Lucas cannot afford to stay behind in broadband. VOTE YES ON PROP B
Has anyone done this successfully before?
Yes! A recent and successful example of this is the City of Mont Belvieu just to the south of us (East of Houston). They are about the same size as Lucas with a population of just over 7,000 people. They too consulted with Magellan and have achieved a 70% subscription rate in just 2 years! They plan to pay off the capital investment 5 years early and have not needed to raise taxes at all!
